Oil and Gas - Bespoke Fibre Networks
Oil and gas – data in the pipeline
Oil and gas companies deal in huge amounts of data. A single proposal to drill a new oil field would have taken 12 tonnes of paper if printed out, one oil company estimated recently. And once work on a new field starts, many readings are taken every few inches on a pipeline that may be several miles long, generating many petabytes of top secret information.
This essential corporate data needs to be swapped speedily between sites that are often spread over a very wide area, necessitating safe, high-bandwidth connections between company headquarters and sister sites, as well as between the company and its secure data centre facilities.
There’s a need also for exchanging these huge volumes of information with government regulatory authorities – all of which adds up to a dedicated optical fibre network solution to deliver results.
Many oil and gas players are looking to add diversity to existing network infrastructure to improve access to data and increase levels of resilience and security.
Many are finding that existing data network resources are just not keeping pace with the growing complexity of operations, the sheer size of networked files and the volume of transactions.
The CAD design work that many carry out on a daily basis involves scanning and then sending information to another site across a data link that may not be viable unless it boasts major bandwidth and high levels of network security. Only fibre can guarantee the right level of resilience and assurance of up-time.
