Tracking the National Grid Gas mains: Geo’s national network

Here at Geo, we know all about the practicalities of collaborating with utilities for national and city fibre deployment.  Our 3,000km national network is the newest, highest quality and most reliable fibre optic network in the UK.

Our national network heritage

The network was built by our predecessor 186K Limited, a subsidiary of what was Lattice Group.  Lattice Group also owned National Grid Gas (née Transco), which was responsible for the national mains gas pipeline. As a result, 186K was able to build the network close to the gas pipelines, making it more secure and resilient against faults and cable cuts.

Greater security for your data transport

How can we offer you a more resilient, less interrupted network for your data?  Because of the proximity to National Grid Gas’ network, and the strict requirements and controls around such a build. This means that you benefit from greater security – National Grid Gas engineers routinely monitor and survey the area – with a far lower risk of network damage or disruption.

A heavily-governed operation

But it doesn’t end there. Although our network benefits from the securities and protection of being alongside the gas mains pipeline, we also need to comply with National Grid Gas’ regulations. So we’ve developed and implemented specific controls and guidelines, including:

  • Assurance regimes for compliance with regulations relating to gas pipelines
  • Specific internal procedures and practices
  • Interface and liaison procedures with National Grid Gas

Yes, there are a lot of operational procedures involved. And the costs aren’t insignificant either. But our partnership with National Grid Gas means that you not only have a network that provides you virtually unlimited bandwidth, but one that offers unparalleled security and resilience.  We think that’s worth it.
